Lighting the Flame Conference

Over 80 young people and teachers from across south London came together for a Schools’ Conference recently to discuss how best to ensure that all school children in south London make the most of London 2012.

Hearing speakers from LOCOG and Go South Go inspired the delegates, who all act as London 2012 Ambassadors within their schools, before they had the chance to share ideas with other schools and put their plans together for this momentous year.

Hosted by The John Fisher School in Purley, the conference was judged to be a great success, with the highlight of the day undoubtedly being the appearance of Sutton’s very own Olympic medalist Bob Wells, who won Bronze in the super-heavyweight boxing back in 1984 in Los Angeles. He spoke about his experience and brought along his kit and medal to show everyone. As one of the young Ambassadors commented, “I loved getting to meet an actual Olympian who’d won a medal. It was inspiring.”

Mark Scully, Headteacher at John Fisher said, “It was a great pleasure for us to host this conference. We are passionate about making sure that our boys take advantage of all the opportunities that London 2012 presents, and it was great to find out about all the great work that other schools are doing.”

Ian Smith, Director of Go South Go said, “I was impressed by the enthusiasm of all the young Ambassadors and their teachers and I’m sure that pupils across south London will benefit as a result of this conference, and will be celebrating the fact that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are coming to our city.”
